Brazilian cops hunt for a career criminal, 32, who broke into a farm and killed a family-of-four before going on a week-long crime spree. More than 200 police officers are involved in the manhunt for a man accused of killing a family of 4 in Brazil.
The manhunt for the 33-year-old suspect, who is believed to be hiding in a rural area of central Goiás state, has included the use of a helicopter. Authorities in Brazil are looking for a career criminal who allegedly broke into a farm and killed a family of four. Lázaro Barbosa is wanted for the murders of a family of four on June 9 in Brazil’s Federal District.
On Wednesday, June 9, Lázaro Barbosa, 32, allegedly attempted to rob a farm home in the Federal District town of Ceilândia, but was shot and stabbed by Cláudio Vidal, 48, and his two sons, Gustavo Vidal, 21, and Carlos Vidal, 15.
Cleonice Marques, Vidal’s wife and the mother of the two others killed, saw Barbosa breaking into the house and called family members for help, according to her brother.
Barbosa allegedly kidnapped Marques and shot her before dumping her body in a stream, where she was discovered Saturday by the local fire department.
Security forces reportedly zeroed in on Barbosa nearly a week later, but he managed to flee after an early morning shootout in Cocalzinho de Goiás, a town in the state of Goiás west of the Federal District, in which a police officer was wounded.
Around 3 p.m., a second police officer attempted to arrest Barbosa when he was shot in the face and fled.
Barbosa allegedly stole a car after killing the family and setting it on fire in Cocalzinho de Goiás on Friday, according to the Military Police.
He broke into a farm three days later, shooting and injuring four people before setting fire to the house. He is accused of kidnapping the caretaker of the farmhouse and forcing him to smoke marijuana.
Barbosa then stole another vehicle on Sunday and abandoned it on a stretch of the BR-070 highway. Barbosa was reportedly shot by a man housesitting a home in Cocalzinho de Goiás on Monday after he entered the home, according to Brazilian online news portal G1.
The man said, “I heard a noise and shouted for my brother-in-law to call the cops.” ‘I’m going in,’ Lázaro had already shouted. Then I fired a shot at him. ‘You hit me, I’m going to kill you,’ he said. Then he bolted.’
Barbosa was captured on surveillance video walking through the shed of a farm house between Edelândia and Girassol. He ran into the forest after asking a worker for food.
On Monday, authorities spent the night guarding a nearby farm house in Edelândia, but they retreated the next day, allowing Barbosa to break in and kidnap a married couple and their 16-year-old daughter.
Before the murder suspect took her and her parents into a nearby forest, where he fled after seeing police helicopters hovering over the area, the girl hid in her bedroom and texted the police, ‘Help, Lázaro is here at home.’ The three people were apprehended by the police.
Barbosa was planning to execute the family, according to Public Security Secretary Rodney Miranda.
Barbosa’s familiarity with the area, according to Federal District police spokesman Michello Bueno, has allowed him to elude capture.
‘He grew up in these parts. Every detail is known to him. ‘He’s also a hunter,’ Bueno added. ‘As a result, he hides and sleeps in trees.’ He’s a knowledgeable individual. He isn’t your typical thief.’
Barbosa has a criminal record dating back to 2007, when he was arrested in Barra dos Mendes, Bahia, on double murder charges, but he escaped from prison 10 days later.
He was arrested in 2009 and imprisoned in Brasilia’s Papuda Penitentiary Complex, but he escaped in 2016. Authorities apprehended him in Guas Lindas de Goiás in 2018 and charged him with murder and illegal immigration.
On April 8, 2020, Barbosa broke into a farm in the Goiás town of Santo Antônio do Descoverto and assaulted an elderly man with an ax.
Authorities claim that on April 26, 2021, he committed a home invasion in the Federal District city of Sol Nascente, locking a man and his son in a bedroom before rapping his wife.
Barbosa attempted to rob a house again on May 17 and kidnapped a family. He locked the men in a room and forced the women to strip down to their underwear and prepare dinner for him.
