He said, “Call the police because he was scared that I was going to beat him up more.”
On Saturday night around 8 PM, when UFC fighter, Polyana Viana was waiting outside for an Uber in front of her apartment complex in Rio de Janeiro, when a man approached her.
The man sat next to her, and tried to steal her phone, but not only did he leave empty-handed, but was rewarded with many punches on his face.
“When he saw I saw him, he sat next to me, He then asked the time, I said it, and I said he wasn’t going to leave,” she said. “So I already moved to put my cell phone in my waist. And then he said, ‘Give me the phone, don’t try to react because I’m armed.’ Then he put his hand over [a gun], but I realized it was too soft.”
“He was really close. So I thought, “If it’s a gun, he won’t have time to draw it.’ So I stood up. I threw two punches and a kick, He fell, then I caught him in a rear-naked choke. Then I sat him down in the same place where we were before and said, ‘Now we’ll wait for the police.'”
It turned out that the gun was actually a piece of cardboard, once his weapon was revealed, he basically gave up.
Polyana Viana (10-2 MMA and 1-1 UFC), knew that it wasn’t a real gun as it felt too soft – she thought it could possible be a toy weapon or maybe a knife.
Viana was alone at the moment and asked for help from people standing by to call the police once the man was subdued. She later told that she kept his arm immobilized in a kimura like position until the police arrived.
According to her, he was taken to an emergency care facility to address his wounds and then to the police station, where Viana filed a police report.
Viana said that she knew that the area was dangerous, and she avoids wandering around by herself, but she figured that she was close to her apartment building, she was waiting for an Uber close to the cabin where the doormen stayed, she’d be safe.
Viana said that she was fine when he first came to sit next to her, “I was fine because he didn’t even react after. Since he took the punches very quickly, I think he was scared. So he didn’t react anymore. He told me to let him go, like, “I’m just asked for the time. I said, “Asked for the time my ass,” because he saw I was very angry. I said I wouldn’t let go and that I was going to call the police.
The robber said, “Call the police, then’ because he was scared I was going to beat him up more.”

This is not the first time someone tried to rob UFC fighter, Polyana Viana is experienced with something like this. Although she had never been mugged in Rio, where she lived for some time, the incident happened when she was staying in Belem. Viana said that she was approached by two men in a motorcycle, one stayed, while the other charged at her.
He broke her umbrella and tried to take her phone away, “I said I wasn’t going to give it to him. He tried to take it from my hand, I punched him in the face, and he was scared this time I was scared, I don’t know if it was because there were two of them.” Viana said.
She added, “So I was scared, but I think he was more scared than I was, so he jumped on the motorcycle and left.”
